GEORGE TOWN: A foreign construction worker ambushed and robbed a lone woman jogger here.
He grabbed her by the hair and held her at knife-point, said George Town OCPD Senior Asst Comm Mior Faridalathrash Wahid.
He said the victim put up a fight during the attack on the track parallel to Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway at 7.30pm on Tuesday.
“She was cut in the left calf and wrist during the scuffle and the robber fled,” he said.
Photos on social media of the victim getting first aid showed her bleeding profusely.
SAC Mior Faridalathrash said investigation led police to a nearby construction site a few hours after the robbery where they found the 23-year-old suspect in the workers’ quarters.
“We found a knife and a striped T-shirt believed to be worn by him during the attack.
“The suspect is an illegal immigrant and has been detained for two weeks under the Immigration Act.
“When the woman is discharged from hospital, we will ask her to identify the suspect,” he said after visiting the victim, a 24-year-old chemist, yesterday.
He also said the suspect could have taken the victim’s handphone because it went missing after the attack.
On whether she was also sexually assaulted, SAC Mior Faridalathrash said police believed the robber groped her body to search for valuables instead.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt while committing a robbery.
