MCA to help fireworks victims claim for damages

PORT KLANG: Klang MCA will assist the fireworks mishap victims to claim for damages from the Klang Municipal Council (MPK).

Its Youth chief Tee Hooi Ling said the victims should not settle with MPK’s offer to cover all their medical expenses.

“After going through such a traumatising ordeal, the victims have grounds to claim for general damages from MPK.

“We have consulted MCA Youth’s legal bureau, which confirmed that the incident is claimable subject to the degree of the injuries.

“We call upon the victims to come to us and we will assist them to file the claims,” Tee told a press conference at the Klang MCA service centre here yesterday.

On Sunday, a total of 14 people – 10 adults and four children – were injured when they were hit by fireworks which exploded on the ground.

The pyrotechnic display was intended to be part of the three-day Fiesta Gegar Klang 2016 and New Year celebration at the Pandamaran Sports Complex here.

Klang MCA vice-chairman Datuk Dr Ching Eu Boon called on MPK to declare where it had sourced the fireworks from.

“MPK, especially its social department director Zaireezal Ahmad Zainuddin, should come clean on how the fireworks were obtained,” he said.

Dr Ching also said that a better spot, such as the hockey stadium nearby, should have been chosen as the launch site of the fireworks and not on the field.
