MCA: Water disruption comes at a wrong time

PETALING JAYA: The water disruption to some 3.9 million households and businesses was insensitive and inconsiderate as it coincides with the school holidays and Christmas, MCA publicity bureau chairman Datuk Chai Kim Sen said.

Chai said the shutting of water supply would affect families preparing for Christmas or holding family reunions during the year-end holidays.

Families preparing for the new school session would also be affected.

“Those living in apartments or condominiums will face trouble collecting rainwater for their water storage.

“MCA understands that Syabas and Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) has to upgrade the water treatment plant and the substation.

“However, the two parties should be more pragmatic and cut the supply in stages, preferably after the Chinese New Year or in May or June during the monsoon season.

“The Selangor government should take care of the welfare of the residents and be sensitive to the complaints and negative feedbacks from the people,” said Chai in a press statement yesterday.

He said based on the previous experience of water disruptions, there was no guarantee that the water supply would be restored in a timely manner.

Chai said even if the water supply was restored, the water would be dirty and smelly.

“The water from the pipe will be left to flow until the water becomes clear again and this is a wastage of water resources.

“I urge voters in Selangor to reject the Opposition in the upcoming general election as they failed to protect the people’s welfare.

“Water is an important basic resource and access to clean water supply is the basic right of all citizens and this cannot be taken lightly,” he said.

Syabas said the water supply schedule had been planned from Dec 19 to 24, with affected areas divided into two zones.
