Spread positive view of Islam

KUALA LUMPUR: Muslim leaders can counter negative perceptions, created by extremists in the name on Islam, through fair and transparent governance, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

He said among the major challenges that Muslims must confront are the barbaric and violent acts of terrorists and extremists claiming to act in the name of Islam.

“These have, unfortunately, skewed the perception of our religion. Therefore, it is up to us, not only to counter these stereotypes, but to face the threats posed by extremist and terror groups by being and preparing wise leaders with great integrity,” he said in his keynote address which was read by Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki at the launch of the 3rd World Muslim Leadership Forum yesterday.

The forum, themed “Governance and Leadership in the Muslim World: the way forward for peace, security and prosperity”, was aimed at promoting dialogue and exchanges of views between the Muslim and non-Muslim world.

Najib said the Muslim world had a duty to create leaders who will lead by example that can be followed by people of all creeds and races.

“The more trust we create, the more opportunity we have to combat ignorance. A great leader should not only achieve personal success and greatness, but also carry others along with them or use their own platform to lift others up,” he said.

Najib also said the Muslim world should develop the halal industry further in order to reach out to a wider range of consumers, and ensure sustainable and quality supply.

“The supply chain business and consumer behaviour are now inextricably linked, and trading partners are realising the benefits of ensuring there is full and transparent information about their products.

“This is why it would be beneficial for industry stakeholders to meet the growing demand for halal goods,” Najib said.
