Off duty cop shoots samurai sword-wielding robber

PETALING JAYA: An off-duty policeman shot and apprehended a samurai sword-wielding man who was in the midst of robbing an electrical shop in Rawang.

The policeman, a sergeant attached to the Gombak police criminal investigation department, was with his family near an electrical goods shop at Batu 16, Jalan Ipoh, Rawang, at round 4pm on Monday when he saw the robber brandishing the sword at the shopkeeper.

Gombak OCPD Asst Comm Ali Ahmad said the robber had taken cash and a tablet from the victim when the policeman stepped in.

He said the officer had revealed himself as police and ordered the thief to surrender. However, the robber charged at him.

"My man had no choice but to defend himself and fired four shots," ACP Ali said when contacted.

The robber collapsed but managed to get up and run towards an accomplice waiting on a motorcycle outside.

With the help of the shopkeeper, the officer, however, managed to arrest both men as well as another individual who had acted as a lookout.
