Trader jailed 14 years for having hand grenade

BATU PAHAT: A pasar malam trader suspected of being a terrorist was jailed 14 years and ordered to be whipped for having a hand grenade.

Md Saifuddin Muji, 28, had admitted that the M67 grenade, found at a house in Kampung Parit Gantung, Rengit, belonged to him.

Sessions Court judge Mohammad Khalid Abd Karim ordered that he be given six strokes of the rotan for the offence under Section 8 of the Firearms Act (Increased Penalties) 1971.

Earlier, the court was told that Md Saifuddin had led a team from the Counter-Terrorism Unit (E8) to his mother’s house on Aug 11 and showed them where he had hidden the explosive device.

When meting out the punishment, Mohammad Khalid said that it was a serious offence because Md Saifuddin intended to attack a temple and several nightclubs in Johor Baru.

“It would have created public fear and chaos,” he told the trader who was in orange lock-up attire and kept his eyes downcast throughout the sentencing.
