Salted chicken shop in Ipoh collapses due to drainage work

The famous happy delicious salt bake chicken restaurant at Jalan Tahwil Azhar that collapsed. No injuries were reported.

IPOH: Part of a salted chicken shop along Jalan Datuk Tahwil Azar here collapsed on Saturday due to drainage work carried out nearby.

One of the supporting pillars of Happy Delicious Salted Chicken gave way due to underground drainage work conducted by the Ipoh City Council (MBI).

The shop is located right opposite the famous Lou Wong Chicken Tauge restaurant.

A Fire and Rescue Services Department spokesman said there were no casualties.

“Right now, we are using forklifts to support the building but I’ve told our officers to get the council to do something about it.

“We got a call at around 11.24am informing us about the collapse. No casualties were recorded,” said the spokesman.

An MBI representative, who was at the site of the incident, said the contractor conducting the drainage work was negligent and that the shop’s owners could lodge a police report to claim damages from the council.

An eyewitness said people were running away from the building when it collapsed and contract workers urged everyone to stay away from the area.

“We heard a loud noise and when we came out, everyone was frantic.

“People were running away from the building when the contractors said the road and part of the building was going to collapse,” he said.

The city council plans to upgrade Jalan Datuk Tahwil Azar to improve the area, as it is one of the tourist spots in the city.

The project, costing RM3.5mil, started this month. The allocation was meant to upgrade the drains, resurface the roads and install new streetlights.
