Driver of runaway bus remanded

IPOH: The driver of the express bus that rammed into 10 vehicles near the Menora Tunnel on the North-South Expressway here has been remanded for four days.  

Magistrate's court assistant registrar Ng Geok Nee ordered the driver to be remanded until Thursday for investigations into the incident at 2.45pm on Sunday at KM265.8 of the southbound lane.  

Earlier Monday, Perak traffic police chief Supt Wan Jamil Wan Chik told reporters outside the courtroom that the driver had nine outstanding traffic summonses issued between 2011 and last year.  

“A total of 63 traffic summonses have been issued to this particular bus involved in the incident,” he added, but declined to provide details on the offences.  

According to Supt Wan Jamil, the driver tested negative for drugs.  

“We are still awaiting the result of other tests from the Chemistry Department,” he said, adding that the vehicle would be sent to Puspakom to be checked.  

Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Sum Chang Keong was reported earlier as saying that the brakes of the bus, which was heading from Penang to Kuala Lumpur, failed while travelling down a slope.
