Seven escape injuries after fire truck falls into stream

KOTA KINABALU: Seven firemen escaped injuries when a fire truck they were travelling in fell to a shallow stream after the wooden bridge gave way at Sikuati in the northern Kudat district, about 200km from here.

Sabah Fire and Rescue Services Department operations chief Khairul Azuwan Ibrahim said the firemen were on their way to put out a bushfire when the incident occurred at about 2pm on Monday.

He said the firemen from Kudat had used that bridge before without any mishap when responding to earlier bushfires.

“I suppose that happened to be the end of the lifespan of the bridge when our fire truck was crossing it,” Khairul said.

He said they were thankful that none of the firemen in the truck were hurt.

“But that is part of the risks we encounter when carrying out our duties,” Khairul added.
