KUCHING: The "citizens' declaration" initiated by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will turn out to be a futile exercise, says Tan Sri Adenan Satem.
The Sarawak Chief Minister said that the declaration was produced by a "cabal of misfits" who used to be "great enemies" with each other.
"It will be an exercise in futility and I am surprised that Tun Mahathir has allowed himself to be used as a tool.
"Wan Azizah says they will use all that to free Anwar. I think it's very ironic," he told reporters after launching the party election machinery at the Kemena PBB branch in Bintulu on Wednesday.
He was referring to PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who was reported to have said that the declaration could be interpreted as an indirect admission that her husband Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had been victimised by the system and freeing him was part of Pakatan Harapan's agenda.
Adenan said the people must be careful of the "shenanigans" that the Opposition was up to.
On a separate matter, Adenan announced that Jepak assemblyman Datuk Talib Zulpilip and Kemena assemblyman Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi would defend their seats in the coming state election.
He said he would announce all Barisan Nasional candidates before the end of the month.
"I am now building up a Barisan team for the coming election. We will contest all 82 seats," he said.
