Cops arrest man over alleged mall stairwell murder

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested a 34-year-old suspect over the alleged murder of a man at a stairwell of a shopping mall here.  

Sentul OCPD Asst Comm R. Munusamy said that the suspect, who is from Taman Bukit Maluri near here, is expected to be remanded Wednesday.  

Police said that a janitor found the victim's body, lying in a pool of blood on the mall’s fifth floor stairwell, at about 8.45am Tuesday.  

The victim, identified as 53-year-old Foo Yong Eng, had reportedly parked his Proton Gen-2 at the mall at about 6am and was seen in closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage with an unidentified woman.

Half an hour later, CCTV cameras near the fifth floor elevators recorded six men hauling the victim into the stairwell.  

“There may have been a fight but it was not caught on camera. The victim had no personal items missing or stolen and there were no stab wounds on his body. He may have been beaten to death,” said Sentul deputy OCPD Supt Mohd Sukri Kaman.  

Police, he said, managed to obtain clear images of the six men who were last seen with Foo and were now working on identifying and tracking them down.  

The victim's body was taken to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital for a post-mortem. The case has been classified as murder.
