Stop speculating on bauxite issue until official statement, urges Wan Junaidi

PETALING JAYA: Everyone should stop speculating on the bauxite issue until an announcement is made by the Pahang state government and Natural Resources and Environment Ministry, says Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaaafar (pic).

“All quarters have been urged not to make any speculations until the announcement, which will be made soon,” said the minister in a press statement Sunday morning.

Dr Wan Junaidi further reiterated that he and Pahang Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob would issue a statement following the Cabinet’s decision to put a temporary stop to bauxite mining in Kuantan, Pahang.

On Saturday, Adnan said the Pahang government and the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry would issue a joint statement on the issue.

Bauxite mining has been in the news following concerns about the health effects of bauxite dust, besides concerns that the massive areas being cleared for mining could lead to mudslides and landslides.

Last week, the sea off Pantai Batu Hitam and Sungai Balok turned red. The incident is believed to have occurred as a result of a downpour which subsequently carried bauxite from the mines to the rivers and into the sea.
