PETALING JAYA: Ipoh-born MasterChef UK 2014 champion Catherine Chin Coombes was at a loss for words over winning the title with wonton soup and nasi lemak.
“Am so ermmm I have no words! Just am so grateful, so pleased, so chuffed and thank you thank you thank you for liking my food,” wrote the 33-year-old mother over her Twitter account.
Coombes, who was sharing her happiness with everyone she knows on Twitter, also paid tribute to her co-finalists Jack Lucas and Luke Owen.
“@jacklucas1 @MasterChef_Luke I love you two, we had so much fun! And I’m so so privileged to cook with you two!!” said Coombes who made a total of 17 tweets after her win.
Coombes lives in Britain with her husband and 18-month-old daughter. She won the final challenge of the 10th series of the annual MasterChef UK reality cooking show, which was aired on BBC One on Friday night, beating Lucas and Owen.
Fans of Coombes urged her to open her own restaurant.
“Please let me know about your restaurant – I honestly think I could eat your food for the rest of my life. Congratulations!” Katy Brand tweeted.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak gave Coombes the thumbs up for showcasing Malaysian-inspired dishes.
“Well done UK Masterchef @WanPingCoombes! Malaysian flavours and talent are truly world-class,” he tweeted.
Surprising judges with her three-course meal, Coombes satiated their expectations with her starter of Chinese dumpling wonton soup, main course of nasi lemak and dessert of vanilla and coconut pannacotta.
Coombes’ Malaysian-inspired spread earned superlative comments from judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace.
According to British online reports, Torode described Coombes as “a cook’s cook” while Wallace quipped: “Rarely have I seen someone whose repertoire can span whole continents.”
Comparing her joy of winning to when she gave birth to her daughter Alexa, Coombes reportedly said: “The last time I felt such emotion was when my daughter was born.
“Pure joy and pure bliss that feels incredible. Epic.”
Coombes said she first started cooking while studying in Oxford and learnt to recreate her mother’s dishes to satisfy her cravings.
