Najib tells CNN investigators will look into it

PETALING JAYA: The preliminary report into the disappearance of MH370 will be released next week, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

In an interview with CNN’s Richard Quest, Najib said he had directed a team to look into the report.

“I hear the voices out there, Richard. And so, I have directed an internal investigation team of experts to look at the report.

“And there’s a likelihood that next week, we could release the report,” he told Quest yesterday.

Asked if there was something “embarrassing” to Malaysia in the report, causing the delay in releasing it, Najib said: “No, I don’t think so.”

On Wednesday, Department of Civil Aviation director-general Datuk Azharuddin Abdul Rahman said they had sent a preliminary report of the incident to the International Civil Aviation Organisation.

Najib also said that Malaysia was not ready to declare the plane as lost and the 239 people on board dead out of respect for the next of kin.

Asked if Malaysia had “bungled” in the search, Najib said that even an advanced country would have “great difficulty” handling such an “unprecedented” issue.

“We didn’t get our communications absolutely right in the beginning, but towards the later part, we got our act together.

“We’re prepared now for this investigation team to do its objective assessment,” he told Quest.

On March 24, Najib announced that the flight ended in the southern Indian Ocean. The search for the plane has now entered its 50th day.

Meanwhile, in KUALA LUMPUR, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar has dismissed talk that investigation into the missing plane had stalled due to a lack of evidence.

“We have recorded 287 statements, including from foreigners, and we expect to record more. We are not ready to reveal our findings as the investigation is still ongoing,” he said yesterday.

In PERTH, the Joint Agency Coordination Centre said Bluefin-21 had now completed about 95% of the focused underwater search area but no items of interest were found.
