Insurance agent gets 11 years jail, six strokes of the cane for cheating housewife

KUALA LUMPUR: An insurance agent was sentenced to 11 years jail and six strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court on Thursday for cheating a housewife into buying insurance policies amounting to RM800,000.

Tee Wei Chiang, 29, was found guilty of cheating Wong Kok Fong, 59, by inducing her into believing that he could help her obtain an insurance policy from Great Eastern.

He was judged to have dishonestly induced Wong to bank in an insurance premium payment of RM400,000 into his account.

The offence was committed at Ambank in Taman Setapak Indah Jaya off Jalam Genting Kelang at 9.55am on Feb 22, 2012.

Tee was also found guilty of a second offence of cheating Wong by inducing her to buy two insurance policies in her daugthers’ names. He is to have induced Wong to hand over a premium payment of RM400,000 via a cheque.

Tee committed the second offence at Taman Kepong at about 3pm on Apr 16, 2012.

Sessions judge Mat Ghani Abdullah sentenced Tee to five years jail and instructed him to be caned three times for the first offence. He was sentenced to a further jail term of six years and three strokes of the cane for the second offence.

Tee was also fined RM50,000 for each offence.

Mat Ghani ordered the sentences to run concurrently from Thursday.

He handed down the decision after the prosecution had succeeded in proving a case beyond reasonable doubt.

Earlier in asking for leniency, Tee’s counsel Mohd Alizal Abdul Razak had said that his client was young and married with a young child. He said Tee was the sole breadwinner and had no previous convictions.

Deputy public prosecutor Amira Sariaty Zainal had said she hoped that the court would mete out a deterrent sentence.

Tee was charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code.

Judge Mat Ghani also granted a stay of execution on the sentences and increased the RM15,000 bail to RM30,000 with one surety.

Tee was also required to surrender his passport.
