New president for MMU

PROF Dr Ahmad Rafi Mohamed Eshaq (pic) has been appointed the new Multimedia University (MMU) president effective Feb 15.

The announcement was made by the MMU Board of Directors chairman Tan Sri Dr Sulaiman Mahbob who described the appointment as highly significant.

“This is since the university is embarking on its MMU 3.0 journey towards becoming an i-University to uphold MMU’s position as the leader in ICT-related education, especially in championing innovation and entrepreneurship,” he said.

Prior to the appointment, Prof Ahmad Rafi was MMU vice- president (academic).

He has also been covering the role of the president since his predecessor Prof Datuk Dr Muhamad Rasat Muhamad passed away last October.

“Prof Ahmad Rafi has been with MMU since 1998.

“He has vast experience and expertise in the fields of virtual reality, virtual heritage, architectural visualisation, animation, educational technology and multimedia.

“This has made him the best candidate to lead MMU onto greater heights,” said Dr Sulaiman.

MMU is one of the top 200 institutions in the QS World University Ranking by subject in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Computer Sciences and Information Systems.

Born on April 10, 1969 in Kampung Peringgit, Malacca, Prof Ahmad Rafi is the fourth president of MMU.

Trained as an architect with a PhD specialising in architectural animation and virtual reality (1998) at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, United Kingdom, Prof Ahmad Rafi has had a distinguished academic career spanning over 26 years.

He was the former MMU Faculty of Creative Multimedia dean, National Academy of Arts, Culture and Heritage acting rector and deputy rector of academic affairs and Creative Content Industry Guild, Malaysia deputy chairman 2.

He has published a significant number of internationally multi-disciplinary refereed journal articles, conference papers and books.

Prof Ahmad Rafi also contributes in several local and international reviewing committees, including as guest editor and reviewer for numerous journals.
