Just in time to gorge on the King of Fruits

THE first thing that Indonesian Dwi Anggreny, 30, did after she landed in Penang from Medan was to gorge on Musang King with her colleagues.

“This is our first stop in Penang for a fun company trip. We chose Penang after finding out that it was durian season.

“We have durian back home but they are not as sweet or fleshy as the ones here,” she said when met at a stall in Macalister Road.

Dwi said she would be making more trips here just for durian.

“It is my favourite fruit. Many dislike the smell but I think it just adds to the taste,” said the programmer.

Sales executive Brittany Zeng, 25, from China, said the imported King of Fruits back home were cheaper but the taste was nothing compared to the durian here.

“My friends and I will definitely be stopping by at a few more places before we head back,” she said while feasting at a stall in Anson Road.

Retired teacher Tan Beng Ewe, 70, who has been living in Kuala Lumpur for the past 50 years, said her family would always make a “pilgrimage” to the island during durian season.

“I used to live here many years ago.

“My family always makes it a point to come here to eat the durian,” she said.

The bumper harvest in Penang has brought down durian prices by as much as half.

Orchard owners in Balik Pulau foresee the season to last until next month.
