INDIA’S 7.6% growth in the current economic climate provides tremendous investment opportunities for Malaysian businesses, said MIC president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam.
“The Malaysian Government places great importance on the relationship with India — the deputy prime minister has just visited India and the prime minister is looking forward to a visit very soon, and I think this will strengthen the relationship between both countries on all fronts,” he said at a “Transforming India” Community Dinner at the HGH Convention Centre in Kuala Lumpur recently.
“We congratulate you on your 7.6% growth in these very difficult times. That growth will give tremendous opportunities for Malaysian businesses.”
The event, to celebrate two years of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, was organised by the Overseas Friends of Barathiya Janatha Party (OFBJP) Malaysia Chapter.
Noting Malaysia and India’s long cultural and historical relationship, Dr Subramaniam, who is also Health Minister, said India’s transformation would definitely open more avenues and opportunities for mutual benefit. “We hope this will pave the way for greater strengthening of this historical relationship we already have.”
He added that Modi’s programmes to give greater equality and equity to the people and eradicate poverty were like the strong principles underlying Malaysia’s economic policies.
“These will give rise to greater income, equality and social stability as well,” he said.
In addition to speeches by OFBJP president Pardeep Batra and BJP general-secretary Ram Madhav, who flew in from India for the event, several entrepreneurs – including Westports Malaysia Sdn Bhd executive chairman Tan Sri G. Gnanalingam and Country Heights Holdings Bhd founder Tan Sri Lee Kim Yew – received awards for their invaluable assistance to OFBJP.
Guests were also treated to a video depicting India’s transformation under Modi, and several Indian dances.
Among the guests were Indian High Commissioner to Malaysia T.S. Tirumurti, judges and diplomats.
