Axiata Group overall champion in ACCA MaSRA for 2015

KUALA LUMPUR: Axiata Group Bhd was adjudged the overall champion in the ACCA Malaysia Sustainability Reporting Awards (ACCA MaSRA) for 2015 recently,

Axiata Group beat 50 other participants in the competition, which is in its 12th year. The competition is supported by TalentCorp and endorsed by Bursa Malaysia.

Out of the 51 organisations which took part, 20 were shortlisted with the final winners decided by a panel of judges led by Securities Commission Malaysia’s executive director of market development Goh Ching Yin.

Axiata’s report impressed the judges for the level of disclosure, which is seen to be robust and showed a good understanding of sustainability-related risks in their operations across various countries, which each have different sustainability reporting requirements.

Beyond reporting, the company also put in place policies and practices for not only its Malaysia operations but the group as a whole to ensure sustainable practices are adopted globally.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Senator Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar presented the awards at a ceremony attended by 250 business leaders and guests.

Coming in second place were Digi and Nestlé who jointly claimed the Runner-up Award for Best Sustainability Reporting.

Sime Darby Property Bhd won the Best First-Time Standalone Sustainability Report.

Nets Printwork Sdn Bhd won the Best Sustainability Reporting in SMEs

Sime Darby Bhd took the top spot for Best Reporting Within An Annual report.

ACCA also awarded the Best Workplace Practices Award to PwC Malaysia for its continuous effort in ensuring a diverse and inclusive workplace policy and practices in terms of gender and age, and also in promoting family-friendly facilities.

Wahid said the winners of the ACCA MaSRA demonstrated that profitability and sustainability need not be mutually exclusive.

“In fact, organisations that embrace inclusivity (including diversity) and sustainability, which are key components of the New Economic Model, have proven to perform better than their competitors in the long run," Wahid said in his keynote address.

The president of the ACCA Malaysia Advisory Committee Datuk Dr Lukman Ibrahim said that for over 20 years across the globe, ACCA has been a leading voice in promoting sustainability reporting for businesses.

“This focus has been amplified in Malaysia and as a result, we see an increasing number of companies who have incorporated sustainability practices in their business blueprint,” he said.

TalentCorp CEO and judging panel member Johan Mahmood Merican said: "PwC is our choice for showcasing best workplace practices because they demonstrated a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion. Women in PwC’s senior management positions exceed the national target of 30%, which clearly shows that the organisation "walks the talk".

“Its achievements are not accidental as it is supported by initiatives to enhance inclusiveness such as mentoring programmes, extending maternity leave to three months, enhancing flexible work arrangements and targeting women on a career break to rejoin the workforce.”
