YANGON: The Dawei Fire Brigade reported that eight people were killed, three were injured and one was missing in an oil tanker fire in Dawei, which lasted for more than 16 hours.

The fire broke out on Monday (Oct 14) at around 4.30pm in Dawei City.

"A fire broke out at the Michili oil tank in the port area. Seven men and a woman were killed in the fire.

"Another two men and a woman were injured while a man is missing," the Dawei Fire Brigade said.

A person close to the security forces said that the fire broke out while fuel was being added to the B29 oil storage tank, which is about 9 ft high, 240ft long and 24ft wide.

In addition, it is known that 50,000 litres of diesel and 50,000 litres of gasoline on the oil tanker were lost in the fire, he said.

According to an official from a social assistance group based in Dawei, it took firemen from Monday evening until Tuesday to extinguish the fire as the ship was carrying fuel oil.

"Since the ship was carrying fuel oil, the fire started which started Monday evening could only be put out overnight.

"The fire was extinguished Tuesday morning around 9am. The three who survived were sent to Dawei Public Hospital," said the official. - Eleven Media Group/ANN
