Malaysian women gymnasts bag bronze in Scotland meet

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian women’s artistic gymnasts rose to the occasion to bag a bronze in the team event at the Artistic Celtic Cup-Commonwealth Invitational in Perth, Scotland.

The Malaysian team of Tan Ing Yueh, Nur Eli Ellina Azmi, Farah Ann Abdul Hadi and Rachel Yeoh amassed a total of 145.200 points to finish third at the Bells Sports Arena on Saturday. Hosts Scotland won the gold with a 156.450 total while Northern Ireland collected 147.800 points for second place.

In the all-around category, Eli Ellina was the best Malaysian performer when she finished joint seventh with the Scottish duo Cara Kennedy and Kirsty Campbell. All three scored 48.600 points.

Ing Yueh finished 13th with a 47.150 total while Rachel was placed 15th on 45.400. Farah could only manage 36.650 points to finish 28th out of 32 competitors.

The event was won by Scotland’s Emma White with a score of 53.250. Compatriot Erin McLachlan (52.800) finished second followed by Trinidad and Tobago’s Marisa Dick (52.550).

Malaysia are also in with a chance to pick up more medals as Ing Yueh, Elli Ellina and Farah have qualified for the apparatus finals.

Ing Yueh will compete in the vault, uneven bars and floor exercise while Eli Ellina will vie for glory in the vault and balance beam. As for Farah, she has qualified for the floor exercise and the uneven bars finals.
