GEORGE TOWN: A huge twister (pic) seen over Dermaga Dalam, Butterworth, on the Penang mainland had many onlookers swept off their feet by what they saw.
Believed to be a waterspout, the twirling dark column descending from the rainy sky appeared off the coast at about 4.15pm yesterday.
It swirled menacingly inland before it suddenly tapered off and vanished from sight.
Many people, after the initial shock, had a field day taking photos and videos of the phenomenon.
A number of netizens then posted images of the scary sighting on social media sites, speculating that it was a tornado.
When contacted, a spokesman from the Meteorological Depart-ment said there were no reports of a tornado.
Asked if it might be a waterspout, the spokesman said it would take some time to determine what it was.
