KTMB announces new Komuter fares from Dec 2

KUALA LUMPUR: KTM Komuter train fares are set to rise from Dec 2, with the highest fare being RM7.10 for a single trip.

KTM Bhd president Lt Kol (B) Sarbini Tijan revealed Monday that travel fares would be increased by 4 sen per kilometre (from 11 sen to 15 sen per km) for the Tanjung Malim-Sungai Gadut and Batu Caves-Port Klang routes.

KTM Komuter fares have not been increased since Feb 2003.

Sarbini added that primary and secondary school students as well as undergraduates who travel via Komuter are set to enjoy a 50% discount on fares.

Currently, only senior citizens, disabled persons and children between the ages of two and six enjoy half-price tickets.

Sarbini added that even with the fare increase, the railway company would still be unable to cover its operational costs.

"To break even, we should be charging 20 sen for each kilometre. (However) the Government has only approved for the fares to be set at 15 sen per kilometre," Sarbini said.

The remaining cost, he said, was subsidised by the Government.
