PETALING JAYA: Former Umno supreme council member Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah is joining PKR, sources close to him have confirmed.
He is expected to be unveiled as a PKR member by the party’s top leadership at a press conference today. A poster announcing his membership began circulating on WhatsApp yesterday evening, though its source is unknown.
The poster also wrongly stated the press conference would be held at the headquarters of the Global Movement of Moderates (GMM) in Damansara Heights.
Saifuddin, who is GMM’s chief executive officer, had reportedly sent a message to his staff informing them that no press conference was scheduled at its office.
He added in the message that anyone asking about a press conference should refer the matter to PKR headquarters.
PKR then issued a reminder that the press conference, scheduled at noon, will be held at the party headquarters in Tropicana.
Neither PKR nor Saifuddin could be reached for comment.
Umno recently issued Saifuddin a show-cause letter for attending a roundtable discussion of Opposition parties on Sept 21.
Party secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said Saifuddin’s motives for attending the meeting, which led to the formation of Pakatan Harapan, were questionable even though he was there as an NGO leader.
