KUALA KANGSAR: While some Muslims have the pelita panjut (traditional bamboo lamp) fixed outside their homes here, others hang star-shaped lanterns to light up their lawns.

To take advantage of this trend, a nephew-uncle team has been busy making such lanterns since the beginning of Ramadan at their village in Kampung Kota Lama Kiri here.

Abdul Manap Dahalan, 64, and Azinul Mashi Mohd Fathil, 49, said business had been brisk with Hari Raya around the corner.

“The bamboo lamp is usually set up three days before Hari Raya.

“The lighting of the pelita panjut is aimed at bringing more festive cheer during the night.

“We want to do our part with our star-shaped lanterns,” said Azinul, adding that they had so far made about 40 lanterns.

“It takes up to three hours to complete a lantern,” he said.

“Most of the orders came locally while we have also received some from other states,” he said, adding that Abdul Manap has been making the lanterns for about 40 years.

Azinul said besides bamboo, string and coloured cellophane were also used.

Each lantern is sold for between RM30 and RM80 depending on the size and design.
