PETALING JAYA: PKR's political bureau has endorsed party president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as the Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat candidate, according to sources.
Wan Azizah, who is also Kajang assemblyman, will contest the seat vacated by her husband and Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim due to his Sodomy II conviction.
In a meeting held late Tuesday night, the party also moved to seek Anwar's approval for their decision.
When contacted on Wednesday, PKR leaders did not want to confirm whether the party had picked Wan Azizah.
"We have not decided (who shall run for Permatang Pauh).
“What was decided at the meeting was that Datuk Seri Anwar is going to be consulted regarding the candidacy. (PKR vice-president) R. Sivarasa will be going to prison either today or after Chinese New Year to seek his opinion," said PKR vice-president Chua Tian Chang, better known as Tian Chua.
Anwar was sentenced to five years imprisonment on Feb 10, bringing about a by-election for his parliamentary seat.
In 2013, Anwar won against Barisan Nasional's Datuk Arif Shah Omar Shah by a 15,671 majority.
