Supt Azizan and his staff with some of the devices recovered from the ATMs

KUANTAN: Police found skimming devices fitted to four automated teller machines (ATM) to steal bank card data of users in Genting Highlands since February.

Pahang Commercial CID chief Supt Azizan Md Isa said apart from the device fitted in the card slot area, each of the ATM was also found to have been installed with wireless closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras believed to be monitored by a syndicate.

"The latest case was detected at 4pm on Aug 7, while the other three cases were detected in February, May and June.

"Initial investigation found that the syndicate had fitted the skimming devices and installed wireless CCTV cameras to the machines to steal users' pin numbers and card data before making fake ATM cards to withdraw money," he told reporters here.

He said police believed that tourists and foreigners had been the syndicate's prime targets as their bank cards were quite easy to be forged.

Azizan said the syndicate preferred using this modus operandi at ATMs placed outside banks.

"We cannot confirm when the devices and cameras were installed. So far, we have yet to receive any report on missing money in Genting Highlands," he said.

He advised banks to run regular checks to ensure that no unauthorised devices were fitted to ATMs. - Bernama
