SHAH ALAM: The Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) has been chided by the state government for disrupting a Hindu wedding last Sunday.
Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim said Jais was instructed to following its standard operating procedures when conducting raids.
Among one of the SOP requirements is that Jais had to confer with state government first in matters concerning other religions and races.
"All Jais officers will have to adhere to this and action will be taken against officers who don't," Khalid told a press conference after chairing the weekly exco meeting Wednesday.
Jais had disrupted the wedding held at a temple because the bride had a Muslim name.
However, Zarina Abd Majid, 31, said in her defence that she was registered as a Muslim by her estranged father when she was a child.
Zarina, who was raised as a Hindu by her mother, also said she had tried several times to change her name and religious status with the relevant authorities, but failed.
Meanwhile, Khalid said Jais was also prepared to help Zarina change her religious status.
