Baram Dam: UN urged to act

MIRI: The plight of some 20,000 rural natives who are to be uprooted by the construction of the proposed RM4bil Baram Dam project in the interior of north Sarawak has been brought to the attention of the United Nations (UN).

Several human rights organisations at state and national level yesterday lodged an official complaint to UN Special Rapporteur on Rights of Indigenous Peoples Victoria Tauli-Corpuz, following an incident in Baram where an attempt was made by the state authorities to dismantle a blockade set up by the Baram natives to prevent the clearing of the forests in the proposed dam site.
