Hockey teams to play home-and-away in league

KUALA LUMPUR: The format for the men’s Division One of the Malaysia Hockey League (MHL) and the inaugural women’s National Hockey League (NHL) will be a one round-robin affair.

A total of 11 teams will compete in Division One following the Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) competitions committee to accept Ipoh City Hall, who played last year, as a last-minute entry on Sunday.

There is also an increase in the number of teams in the NHL with Police joining the fray, bringing the number of teams to nine.

Competitions committee chairman M. Gobinathan said all the teams were agreeable to the one round-robin format at the team managers’ meeting on Sunday.

“We have given all the teams one week from today to submit their team lists and also to sort out any issues regarding dual registration. We will not interfere with the teams’ selection of players, but any player found to be dual registered will be barred from playing in the competition.

“The men’s matches will be on a home and away basis. Each team will get to play an equal number of home and away matches.

“The men’s competition will start on March 13 while the women’s league on March 16. The women’s games will all be played at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil,” said Gobinathan.

The teams were also informed of the prize money structure.

The women’s event will have a total prize money of RM33,000 with the champions receiving RM15,000. The runners-up, third and fourth placed teams will pick up RM10,000, RM5,000 and RM3,000 respectively.

For the men’s league, the champions will get RM20,000 while the runners-up will get RM15,000. The third and fourth placed teams will receive RM7,000 and RM5,000 respectively.

For the President’s Cup involving the top eight teams, the winners will collect RM30,000 followed by RM20,000, RM10,000 and RM5,000 for the next three placed teams.
