IPOH: Karl Heinz Weigang is back in Malaysian football.

In a statement on Monday, the Perak Football Association (PAFA) named the 80-year-old German as the head coach with Syamsul Saad as his assistant for the remaining of their Super League season.

Earlier, Syamsul was in charge but Perak failed to impress. The silver state are in 10th spot in the 12-team league with just 11 points after 12 matches.

Said PAFA president Datuk Seri Abdul Puhat Mat Nayan: “Weigang’s no stranger when it comes to Malaysia football, especially to Perakians. He has vast experience in football management and coaching. His appointment is in line with the our three-year development plan.”

He added: “We believe the cooperation between Weigang and the other coaches will further strengthen the team in competing in the remainder of the season.”

Weigang was coach of the national team when Malaysia qualified for the 1980 Olympic Games.

In 1997, he was named as Perak coach. He led Perak to win the Malaysia Cup in 1998 and 2000.

Weigang also coached Johor from 2005 to 2006.
