PALEMBANG: A jet-lagged Liverpool side fought back from two goals down to edge Frenz United Indonesia (FUI) 6-5 in the Group A opening match of the Frenz International Cup tournament at the Gelora Sriwijaya Stadium in Jakabaring here on Saturday.
The visitors touched down barely 16 hours before the kick-off at 4.30pm but still managed to put up a gallant fight in the Under-18 tournament.
The physical strength and the superior individual skills of the Liverpool players saw them claw back into the game against a gutsy FUI side led by Iranian striker Reza Karimi.
The home team led 3-2 at half-time with a brace from Reza (15, 35) and Yugan Poobathy (18th). The other scorers were Bayu Firmansyah (66) and Riswan Yuswan (71).
Liverpool got their goals through a brace each from skipper Wilson Herry (45, 73) and Correia Gomes Toni (53, 75). Nicholas James (19) and Phillip Adams (67) were the other scorers.
Frenz Indonesia have only themselves to blame after having led for the most part of the game before allowing the lethargic Liverpool side to finish strongly in the final quarter of the match.
In another Group A match, Fayenoord beat Guangzhou Evergrande 5-1.
