Ahmad Fahmi Farhan Fuat on his way to winning the gold in the men’s individual time trial at Sukma. He won the 40km race in 55:15.699.
KANGAR: Not even the searing afternoon heat could stop cyclist Ahmad Fahmi Farhan Fuat of Pahang from claiming the gold medal in the men’s individual time trial on the Changlun-Kuala Perlis highway.
The 21-year-old Fahmi stopped the clock at 55:15.699 to win the 40km race. Mohamad Nur Aiman Mohd Zariff of Terengganu, who was the fastest rider before Fahmi’s gold-medal feat, grabbed the silver in 55:51.608. Muhammad Mustazlee Ishak of Johor completed the podium in 56:06.142.
Fahmi initially had doubts over his ability to perform well as he was slotted to race in the second group, when the afternoon sun was blazing hot. The first group had their run in the morning.
“It was very hot and the strong wind made it difficult for me out there. I just kept my head down and kept pushing until the finish line,” said Fahmi, whose gold medal on Wednesday was his first ever at Sukma after three appearances.
Meanwhile, Nur Aisyah Mohamad Zubir kept the momentum going for Terengganu as she claimed the women’s gold medal.
Aisyah completed the 33km course in 53:04.314 to beat Nurul Nadia Mohd Fauzi of Pahang who clocked 54:56.921. Siti Fatimah Ismail of Kedah, Monday’s mountain bike cross country gold medallist, settled for the bronze in 55:04.720.
“From the recon we did a few days ago, I knew it could be very windy on the course. I just went full blast from the beginning because I knew it could be anyone’s race,” said Aisyah.
