KUALA LUMPUR: It was heartache for Malaysia at the Vietnam International Series badminton tournament.

Malaysia had four representatives in four finals in Bac Ninh, but ended up empty handed.

Second seed Lim Yin Fun was the first to bite the dust, losing 19-21, 21-23 to unseeded Chen Su-yu of Taiwan in the women’s singles final.

Next up was junior Lim Chi Wing. Seeded fifth, Chi Wing went down 14-21, 21-23 to top seed Nguyen Tien Minh of Vietnam in the men’s singles showdown.

Unseeded Lim Yin Loo-Lee Meng Yean then found top seeds Nguyen Thi Sen-Vi Thi Trang of Vietnam too strong in the women’s doubles, losing 18-21, 22-24.

The best chance of the day belonged to sixth seeds Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Mohd Rumsani. But the Malaysians, who won their maiden senior title at the Singapore International Series last month, went down 21-17, 19-21, 20-22 in a titanic 72-minute men’s doubles tussle to second seeds Do Tuan Duc-Phan Hong Nam of Vietnam.

“There were several poor line calls but it is all right. This is a good learning experience for Sze Fei and Izzuddin. A defeat like this will spur them to work harder,” said Cheah Soon Kit, the national men’s doubles back-up coach.
