A positive start for Wei Feng at Vietnam Open

PETALING JAYA: Chong Wei Feng could not have asked for a better start as he seeks his first international title as an independent shuttler after reaching the men’s singles third round at the Vietnam Open in Ho Chi Minh City.

The former national shuttler beat Lee Cheuk Yiu of Hong Kong 21-12, 21-17 in the second round on Wednesday.

The 11th-seeded Wei Feng had earlier overcome Taiwan’s Chiu Yu-jen 21-9, 21-8 in the first round.

Also through to the last 16 are Tan Chun Seang and former world junior champion Zulfadli Zulkiffli.

Chun Seang defeated Taiwanese Lu Chia-hung 21-11, 21-10 while Zulfadli beat Pratul Joshi of India 21-10, 21-13 in the second round.

Goh Giap Chin failed to join the trio in the last 16 after going down 16-21, 21-6, 19-21 to Taiwan’s Lin Yu-hsien.

In men’s doubles, top seeds Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong were taken to the distance by Liu Wei-chen-Tseng Min-hao of Taiwan before prevailing 15-21, 21-19, 21-17 in almost an hour.
