Negotiating social media sensibly


IN his article “Tabayyun in the age of social media” (The Star, Dec 13), Dr Shaikh Mohd Saifuddeen Shaikh Mohd Salleh argued that the “sharing without checking” attitude in social media is not wise and we are responsible for verifying news and information before we share or forward it.

No doubt the ability to transmit information quickly to a ready audience is one of the biggest attractions of social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and etc. However, increased connectivity also throws up difficult questions about ethics, privacy and common decency.
