THE United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation estimates that about 795 million of the world’s 7.3 billion population suffer from chronic undernourishment now. Yet, about a third of the food worldwide goes to waste.

Food waste or food loss is food that is discarded or lost or left uneaten. The causes of food waste or loss are numerous, and occur at the stages of production, processing, retailing and consumption.
