Step up enforcement

THE proposed increase in fines for traffic offences, if implemented, may not meet the objective of reducing road accidents if it is not accompanied by stricter enforcement and effective road safety campaigns.

The fact that 140,000 traffic summonses issued by the police since Op Selamat 8 began on Feb 1 indicates that Malaysians are not fazed with traffic compounds. This also illustrates the ugly side of Malaysian road users as they drive or ride recklessly, flouting traffic rules without regard for the safety of other road users or their own.
