MIRI: Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu (PBB) of Sarawak believes the Malaysia Agreement 1963 is the supreme document that can restore the status of Sarawak and Sabah as equal partners in Malaysia.
PBB chief for Telang Usan branch Dennis Ngau said Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was mistaken when he said that the Pakatan Harapan Government needed two-thirds majority in Parliament to amend the Federal Constitution for Sabah and Sarawak to be equal partners with the federation.
"This is not a case of Sarawak and Sabah having to request for status to be recognised as equal partners of Malaysia with the peninsula.
"The equal partner status is already clearly spelled out in the Malaysia Agreement.
"It is our fundamental right as partners who formed Malaysia.
"That is the supreme document to rely on. If Tun Mahathir and Pakatan Harapan Putrajaya Government want to, they can rely solely on the Malaysia Agreement and take the necessary steps to restore the equal partner status of Sarawak and Sabah," he added.
Ngau and about 400 PBB members held a family day to celebrate Malaysia Day at the Beraya beach near Miri.
He said that if Pakatan still insisted that they needed support from Sarawak parties to amend the Federal Constitution, PBB MPs will surely support.
