Two more Navy men hospitalised

IPOH: Three days after two navy personnel died in the Sungai Wangi detention room in Sitiawan, two more navy men from the same unit were hospitalised for similar injuries.

Perak police chief Comm Datuk Hasnan Hassan said the two men in their 30s sustained injuries to their abdomen.

“Their injuries were similar to what the two deceased had, but the impact was probably less severe.

“They are currently undergoing treatment at the Royal Malaysian Navy Hospital in Manjung,” he told reporters after the state-level Warriors’ Day celebration at the state secretariat building here yesterday.

On Friday afternoon, Muhammad Lailatulman Mohd Sukri, 26, and his colleague Nik Muhammad Baihaqy Nik Mat, 28, both Laskar Kelas 1 (Able Rate), died after a physical training session at the unit.

The case was initially classified as sudden death, but was subsequently reclassified as murder following post-mortem reports, which revealed signs of abuse and injuries on their bodies.

Comm Hasnan said two more suspects were arrested on Sunday in connection with the deaths, bringing the total number of suspects nabbed to five.

Aged 29 and 37, both are naval police tasked with carrying out lockup duties at the unit.

“Police are recording statements from the two victims admitted to the hospital.

“The police forensic unit, together with a team from Bukit Aman, is also investigating the CCTV recording,” he said.

Comm Hasnan added that the police were still investigating the motive of the murders and whether the incident occurred during the training session or at other times.

He said the police were investigating the deaths of Muhammad Lailatulman and Nik Muhammad Baihaqy under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

As for the two hospitalised navy men, the case was being investigated under Section 325 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt and Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, he added.
