Two ‘Datuks’ in Gatco probe on bail

PETALING JAYA: The Datuks who were picked up by anti-graft officials over the Great Alonioners Trading Corpo­ration Bhd (Gatco) probe have been granted bail.

The two brothers and an ex-bank officer were granted bail on Oct 1, by magistrate Nur Amalina Mohd Noor.

Their original remand period was to end yesterday.

Bail was set at RM250,000 each for the two brothers, while the other suspect’s bail was set at RM20,000, all to be in one surety.

Gatco was formed in 1977 by the National Union of Plantation Workers for the purpose of esta­blishing a land development scheme for its members, where settlers paid a RM7,600 deposit each for their allocated plot of land.

However, the scheme failed and Gatco went bankrupt, and the appointed liquidators began negotiations to sell the land, which was sold to Thamarai Holdings Sdn Bhd in 2006, kicking off the dispute.
