Arrested: Driver who hit Paralympian cyclists

KUALA SELANGOR: The driver involved in the accident that caused multiple injuries to four Paralympian cyclists and their head coach has been arrested.

Kuala Selangor OCPD Supt Ruslan Abdullah said the 46-year-old driver was arrested and taken to the Kuala Selangor traffic police department for further action.

“We plan to charge him on Friday. The case is being investigated under Section 43 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless driving,” he said on Thursday.

Supt Ruslan said it was not a case of a hit-and-run accident.

“We initially thought it was a hit and run but upon further checks, we found that the driver had come forward to the Kampung Baru Subang police station at around 3pm,” he said.

The earlier confusion was caused by wrong information on the car registration number, he added.

The accident occurred near KM12.6 of the Kuala Lumpur-Kuala Selangor (Latar) Highway at 10.50am on Thursday.

National cycling coach Johari Nayan was training with his para cycling team of Mohd Nor Rizuan Zainal, 31, Khairul Azwan Wahab, 25, Nur Syafiq Suhaimy, 19, and Khairul Nizam Mohd Ali, 23, when a four-wheel drive rammed into them.

The victims suffered multiple injuries and were sent to Sungai Buloh Hospital for treatment.
