Arrest is to whitewash corruption, claims Kit Siang

PETALING JAYA: Opposition lawmaker Lim Kit Siang has described the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) arrest of Penang executive councillor Phee Boon Poh as an attempt to “whitewash corruption” in the country.

The veteran DAP leader said he has known Phee for more than 30 years and believes that he is the latest victim of corrupt power play.

“If Phee is corrupt, produce the evidence and by all means arrest and charge him,” he said in a blog post on Saturday.

He also said that he did not believe Phee belonged to “the breed of corrupt political leaders” who enriched themselves through politics.

“Instead of eradicating corruption, the MACC has become an instrument to whitewash corruption at the highest political levels,” he said.

Lim, also Gelang Patah MP, said that if Phee could be arrested merely over some letters allegedly issued by his office in relation to a purportedly illegal factory, then other national and state leaders with disproportionate wealth should also be nabbed by the MACC.
