BUKIT KAYU HITAM: The unusual size of a car speaker, which occupied almost the entire boot space of the vehicle, caught the attention of sharp Customs officers.
They had stopped the car driven by a 22-year-old youth at the inspection lane of the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security Complex here on Wednesday.
The youth was ordered to pop open the boot.
Once the boot was opened, the officers immediately sensed something amiss, as the speaker was unusually large, taking up almost the entire space.
“Upon closer inspection and when the rear seats were opened, the officers found compressed slabs of dried leaves believed to be cannabis hidden inside the speaker.
“The cannabis weighed about 198.45kg with an estimated value of RM396,900,” state Customs director Datuk Joinery Alifiah told a press conference yesterday.
The driver was arrested, and the car impounded. The cannabis was believed to have been smuggled from a neighbouring country for the local drug market.
The youth has been remanded for 14 days until Aug 23.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death sentence.
