KUALA LUMPUR: Bollywood actress Kajol was in town on Thursday with Tamil superstar Dhanush and director Soundarya Rajinikanth to promote the Tamil film Velaiilla Pattadhari 2, or VIP 2.
The stars took time off to greet fans in the city, and meet the Prime Minister’s wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.
All three stars shared on Twitter updates of their visit – Soundarya and Kajol posted a picture with Rosmah, while Dhanush gushed about his fans singing to him.
A small stage was set up opposite Jalan Munshi Abdullah in front of Jakel Mall, where the trio spoke to the crowd about the film, which is set to be released in August in Malaysia. The event started with a local group dancing to a track from the film, joined by Dhanush during the intro.
“I have never felt so much love,” said actor-singer Dhanush – who happens to be Tamil movie superstar Rajinikanth’s son-in-law and is married to Soundarya’s older sister Aishwarya – before serenading the crowd with a popular number, which the crowd happily joined in.
Pointing to the people shouting her name, Kajol said: “Namaste, selamat petang, yes? I don’t know how to say this but there’s so much love. Thank you everybody. I can see you. I can see you up there.”
Kajol, who turns 43 next month, looked stunning and as beautiful as the first time audiences saw her in films like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001).
This is only the second time that she is acting in a Tamil film. The first time the Hindi actress appeared in a Tamil movie was 20 years ago in Minsara Kanavu.
“We’re here for VIP 2. I wasn’t sure if I should do a Tamil film or not because I don’t speak Tamil but seeing you all right now, I almost understood what Dhanush said ... almost. What I really got from it is how much you guys absolutely LOVE me! Thank you! I am humbled,” she said.
The actress, who is married to actor Ajay Devgan and is a mother of two, has been choosy about the roles she picks as she wants to concentrate on her family.
In a recent interview, Kajol explained she has not done acting projects in other languages because she feels she would be concentrating so much on memorising the dialogue that her performance would be compromised.
Kajol said on Thursday: “Dhanush is a fine actor, and it has been an amazing experience working on this film with him and Soundarya.”
All three stars were sporting enough to entertain the crowd, going down from stage and taking pictures with fans.
In VIP 2, Kajol plays a businesswoman who makes life difficult for Dhanush’s engineer character, Raghuvaran, who finds new challenges in his work and personal life.
According to Dhanush – credited for VIP 2’s plot – the sequel shares the same message and has family drama central to its plot, much like the first film.
Kajol, who was last in Malaysia in 2014 to launch Astro’s BollyOne HD channel, tweeted again yesterday, signing off with: “So much love. Thank you Malaysia! Jumpa lagi!”
