Flash floods hit parts of Johor

JOHOR BARU: Flash floods in Segamat near here caused by heavy rain put a damper on Hari Raya festivities for five families whose homes were damaged by floodwaters Tuesday.

State health, environment, information and education committee chairman Datuk Ayub Rahmat said 28 residents from five families in Kampung Permatang Panjang, Jementah were affected by the flash floods on Tuesday at around 6.15am.

"The water has receded and the families were not required to relocate to a flood relief centre," he said.

In Rengit, Batu Pahat, flash floods displaced 43 people from seven families following a heavy downpour Tuesday.

Residents from Kampung Sungai Kluang in Rengit were relocated to the Kampung Parit Jalal relief centre on at 2.45am.

Batu Pahat urban and rural planning department chairman Lt Syahir Zahari said one of the families had left the relief centre to their second home while the other six families were still seeking temporary relief at the centre as of 10am Tuesday.

"The flash flood was caused by water gushing from a crack in the Pantai embankment.

"The Irrigation and Drainage Department is currently carrying out work to repair the damage," he said, adding that the floodwaters had yet to recede.

Syahir said that the displaced families were given necessary aid such as food, water and other basic items from the Welfare Department.
