MCMC: No ransomware cyber attacks reported in Malaysia

PETALING JAYA: There have been no reports of cyber attacks in Malaysia amid massive global ransomware cyber attacks that have hit nearly 100 countries since Friday.

In a statement, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said no attacks have been reported in Malaysia as of 10am Saturday.

However, the commission urged Internet users to immediately take precautions to ward off any kind of cyber attacks.

Theses include updating their software, ensuring that all hosts have enabled endpoint anti-malware solutions and immediately backing up vital data to external hard drives or cloud storage services.

Although there have been no reports, MCMC said it will continue to monitor the situation together with other enforcement agencies.

A fast-moving wave of cyber attacks reportedly hit worldwide on Friday, apparently exploiting a flaw exposed in documents leaked from the US National Security Agency.

The attacks came in the form of ransomware, a technique used by hackers that locks users' files unless they pay the attackers a designated sum in the virtual currency Bitcoin.
