Cops deny role in organising Klang fireworks event

PETALING JAYA: South Klang police have denied any role in organising a New Year's event that saw 14 people getting injured by fireworks after they exploded on the ground at the Pandamaran Sports Complex on Sunday.

District police chief Asst Comm Alzafny Ahmad denied a report published in a Malay daily quoting Klang Municipal Council (MPK) president Datuk Mohamad Yasid Bidin as saying that the police were part of the organising committee for Fiesta Gegar Klang 2016.

ACP Alzafny refuted Mohamad Yasid’s claims, saying that the police were not part of the committee.

“We were invited only once to attend a meeting about the programme on Nov 24 last year.

“Since then, we were never involved in any meetings or discussions regarding the event,” he said in a statement on Monday.

ACP Alzafny said the organisers had not applied for a permit, nor did they consult with the police about having the fireworks show.

“We were under the impression that the fireworks display had been cancelled.

“As such, we focused only on the safety of the people. It is the responsibility of the police to monitor security at public events,” he said.
