Cop remanded for allegedly smuggling gun

ALOR SETAR: A 26-year-old policewoman has been remanded for seven days in connection with the smuggling of a pistol and 30 rounds of ammunition along the North-South Expressway in Changlun near here.

Kedah police chief Datuk Asri Yusof said the policewoman’s 31-year-old husband from Kamunting, Perak, and another married couple from Selangor, aged 41 and 35, were also arrested on Sunday night.

The policewoman’s husband and the other male suspect tested positive for methamphetamine.

Asri said all four suspects were being investigated under Section 8 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971 and Section 8(a) of the Firearms Act 1960.

For the first offence, the suspects face imprisonment of up to 14 years in jail and no less than six strokes of the cane upon conviction.

Under Section 8(a) of the Firearms Act 1960, they could be sentenced up to seven years in jail or fined RM10,000, or both if convicted.

On Monday, it was reported that the two couples, who were travelling in a convoy, were detained by police officers from the Kedah and Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department after they found a Luger pistol with 30 live 9mm bullets in one of the cars.

The pistol and bullets were found in a backpack in the rear of the car used by the policewoman and her husband. — Bernama
