KOTA KINABALU: The body of a form five student who drowned after going for a swim at Tanjung Aru beach here has been recovered.
City police chief Asst Comm M Chandra said the body of Mohd Khairul Firdaus Lamasin was found washed ashore at 6.30am on Monday.
He said the SMK Kinarut student had gone to the beach with his family at about noon on Sunday and went for a swim with his siblings immediately upon getting there.
However, Mohd Khairul stayed in the water when his siblings decided they had had enough of swimming.
Chandra said that when the younger siblings emerged from the water, they noticed that Mohd Khairul was no longer at the spot where they had last seen him.
The family began frantically searching for Mohd Khairul and after failing to locate the teenager, called the emergency services number.
Chandra said a search was mounted by police, firemen as well as Civil Defence Department personnel at 1pm on Sunday.
He said the search effort for the teenager was suspended at 6.30pm on Sunday with the onset of darkness and resumed at first light on Monday.
